College or Technical School, Degree or CertificateThe computer field and industry is one that changes often and quickly. Skills, software, applications, technology that you learn one year, could be obsolete the next year. With that said, many employers prefer potential employees who can learn concepts and learn to adapt to the changing landscape. If you have good learning skills and can pick up things fast, the changing technology issues will not have much of an impact. One thing that can help offset this fast changing technology is the ability to learn concepts. For example, if you can learn how to program and/or write computer code, it will not matter much what particular language your writing for, as every computer language has similar concepts. So whether you need a college degree, particularly for higher-level jobs such as project management positions or a technical certification for specific niche employment, the decision is dependant on your personal goals. A college degree program lasts from two to four years. A technical or computer training school program is often shorter, yet more concentrated on the field of study. A certification in networking, for example, can be completed in nine months or less. For many people who have decided a four-year degree is not for them, such programs offer an attractive alternative. Job Descriptions & SalariesComputer Technician A technical certification is different than getting a college degree. A basic certification in computer hardware and software will get your foot in the door of most companies, while many people go on to earn more advanced certifications in network administration or engineering. An average starting salary for a certified computer technician is $25,000 to $35,000, while those with advanced certifications earn $50,000 to $60,000+. Graphic Designer Graphic Designers can work in a marketing department or an ad agency or a multimedia company. They design marketing and sales material, advertising, websites, product packaging, signage, and many other things. Starting salaries range from $28,000 to $35,000 and can be higher will a college degree or with a more rounded skill set. Computer Programmer A computer programmer can be self taught, a person with a computer science degree from a college or university, or received a certification in a particular computer language from a technical school. Programming jobs include building commercial software and custom business applications, web development, database development, and computer game programming. Starting salaries average $35,000 to $85,000. The wide range is due to industry needs at the current time. Webmaster A webmaster can have a variety of job responsibilities ranging from graphic design, programming to network administration. A company may have an e-commerce, dynamic information, or a static brochure type site, any of which greatly effect the skills requirements of the webmaster. With such a broad set of skills needed, a combination of college and certification courses is often necessary. Starting salaries range from $43,000 to $65,000. |
