E-Commerce Specialist
The E-Commerce Specialist Master Certificate Program will teach the student
how they can build their own E-commerce Web site using Allaire's ColdFusion
with a solid grounding in the tools and skills of computer-generated design.
In addition to emphasizing technical proficiency, essential concepts such
design theory and design methodology are integrated.
The Graphics Essentials module presents the formal elements of typography,
color, industry practices, and idea generation, as well as the development
of professional attitudes and approaches to problem solving. Discussion,
demonstration, and hands-on projects that simulate real-world scenarios,
teach students how to "think like designers". This intensive
learning environment will also allow the students to get the most out
of the powerful creative tools available to them.
In the beginning of the Web Essentials module, students will look at the
technologies that make the Internet so popular and how they can create
effective and efficient websites. By starting at the beginning and introducing
the core technologies of HTML and web graphics students will learn how
to write code effectively and build easily navigable sites. Later in the
module, students will learn Macromedia Dreamweaver, which is a very robust
application that incorporates HTML, Dynamic HTML, JavaScript, and powerful
site management features into a customizable application.
The focus of the Web Design module is the front end or creative side of
web development. Aside from a web site being quick to download and having
valuable content, it should be aesthetically pleasing. Navigation on the
Internet can be a nightmare and many sites are not visually pleasing.
Traffic may be increased to the web sites we create by focusing on the
effective design, information architecture, and usability factors. In
terms of the "wow" factor, we teach Flash, an established technology
that creates very interactive, dynamic web sites using vector animation.
Students will work to create a Flash based site that will promote their
interface and design skills.
The Web Development module focuses on the back-end development, instead
of the design and interface of the site. In these classes, students will
learn the JavaScript programming language and how to incorporate their
scripts to make their web pages more dynamic. Furthermore, students will
learn SQL, the language that will allow them to extract data from databases.
Finally, they will also learn Allaire ColdFusion to develop rapid interactive
applications for the web.
Throughout the E-Commerce module, students will have direct hands on experience
with the practical steps needed to design and develop such a site. At
the same time students will also be discussing many of the issues surrounding
the implementation and maintenance of an E-Business. Topics discussed
will range from hosting issues, to marketing strategies.
Length of Program:22 weeks in the day program or approximately 62 weeks
part-time in the evening program.
